신용일의 회화작업은 붓이나 파레트가 불필요합니다. 마음주머니(비닐주머니)에 접착 미디엄과 물로 흙을 반죽하여 담고, 비닐주머니에 구멍을 내어 맨손아귀에서 쥐어짜며 흘러내어 ‘직지’의 법어들을 부조형식으로 직접 새겨 냅니다.
세계최고의 역사를 갖고 있는 금속활자가 1377년(고려우왕3년)에 한국 땅에서 만들어졌고 청주 ‘흥덕사’에서 인쇄되었습니다. 바로 그 인쇄본으로 634년전의 <白雲和尙抄錄佛祖直指心體要節> : 백운화상초록불조직지심체요절을 한자로 옮겨심는 의미는 잊혀진 마음의 유산을 환기시킴과 동시에 인간본성의 마음 밭에 새로운 자각의 씨앗을 심고자 하는것입니다. 그것들은 역사의 ‘되뇌임’으로 망각되었던 자성의 빛과 영광을 감성의 땅(회화적 공간)에 되비쳐 내는 작업입니다. 그러나 그것의 문자적 고착을 다시 부정하고 초월하기 위해 그 위에 흙을 뿌리고 안료나 먹물, 아크릴 물감을 묽게 풀어 화면에 엎지르고 긁고 문지르고 어루만지듯 적시고 눌러주어 따뜻한 여명과 황혼의 질감을 동시에 창출합니다.
Shin’s work does not require brush or pallet. Kneaded soil with adhesion medium and water put into mind pocket(vinyl pocket) and then, a hole is made on the pocket. After then he squeezes the pocket with hand and writes words of Essentials of a Buddhist Sermon in the form of relief.
Metal movable type with the oldest history in the world was created in Korea in 1377(the third year of king Woo in Goryeo) and publications were printed with the Metal movable type in Heungduk-sa temple' in Cheongju. With the printed version, he writes words of Essentials of a Buddhist Sermon written by the Monk Baekwoon' <白雲和尙抄錄佛祖直指心體要節> in Chinese letter in the way shown above. This work intends to remind forgotten relic of mind and to plant new seeds of enlightenment in the mind field of human nature. This work brings light from ones own self and glory which were forgotten to land of sentiment(space of painting) through reflection on history. But the painter negates fixations of letter and tried to overcome it. To do this, the painter sprinkles soil over the letter and put pigment, Chinese ink, or acrylic colors over it. After then, the painter equally rubs and wets, presses soil etc. as if he treats something carefully. In the end, warm daybreak and texture of dusk are simultaneously created.
